Europe

At the eve of World War II
August 1939

The map reflects borders at the eve of World War II, August 31, 1939. After the war a number of borders changed as did the names of countries. Rescue stories reflect the country of rescue at the time the rescue occurred. Where a country has changed its borders and country names have changed, the current country is included in the narrative of the rescue story. In March 1939, prior to the outbreak of World War II, Czechoslovakia was divided into the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and Slovakia.
